Friday afternoon
Lex looks cranky, but he wasn’t…he was just serious about filling up his watering can.

Pool party
Today’s high temp was only 97 degrees. It’s amazing how nice that feels compared to the triple digits!
Lex’s cold is a lot better today. He just has a bit of a lingering cough now. This afternoon we joined some members of our new play group at the pool for some fun in the sun. As usual, Lex was surrounded by women.

Heat wave!
I’m sure you’re all aware by now that Portland has been having some record-breaking weather. The last two days have been around 107! I’ve never been so grateful to have air-conditioning.
Meanwhile, Lex has a cold. Go figure, right? The poor kid spends his days coughing and sneezing and sweating. I gave him his first popsicle this afternoon, and he really enjoyed it.

We’re trying to do all our activities in the morning to avoid being out in the scorching afternoon sun. Today we reunited with some old friends from our original play group for some wading pool fun at Laurelhurst Park.

Chivalry isn’t dead. Here’s Lex sharing a ball with his friend Ayla:

Zoo, Gymboree, etc.
Today Lex and I visited the zoo again. We arrived right when it opened in order to beat the heat, and we only stayed for about an hour and a half. But it was still an action-packed morning!
Lex’s favorite zoo exhibit doesn’t even have any live animals…it’s just a wall of trickling water with fake salmon. But the boy loves to play in any source of water, so it was hard to pull him away.

Here I think Lex is “people watching,” not duck watching.

The other morning I woke up and found this visitor stealing our bird seed. No wonder we’ve been going through so much food lately!

Picking blueberries
This morning our family picked blueberries at a local u-pick. It was a beautiful day and we had a lot of fun.

Lex really got into picking the blueberries. Of course he didn’t discern the ripe ones from the green ones, but he was an enthusiastic helper.

After our berry picking we went to a summer festival at a nearby park. Lex was very pleased when he was given an orange balloon.

It was blazing hot, so we didn’t stay long at the park. But we did get a chance to see the local police dogs show off their Schutzhund training in a cool demo. Here the policeman is wearing a thick training sleeve and the dog is literally hanging off of him in attack mode:
